The King visits Brandon in 1939
5/24/2009 at 6:28 AM
On May 24th 1939 the shadow of War was looming over the world when the citizens of Brandon received a brief visit from His Royal Highness King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The city’s Mayor Young and Member of the Legislative Assembly George Dinsdale pleaded for a longer visit, but only a twenty-minute stopover at the Canadian Pacific Railway depot on Pacific Avenue was allowed.
In January when the Ottawa arranged program was organized a storm of dissatisfaction erupted among Brandon’s Populous, causing an unnamed Brandonite to remark: “For a small rooster, Brandon has a loud crow!”
The Depot was surrounded by thousands of school children trying to sneak a glimpse of the Royal visitors.
