After a ninety year history of reporting Canada’s History the title of this venerable magazine has been forced to change its name because of misunderstanding and innuendo.
Founded 90 years ago by the Hudson’s Bay Company as a Staff News Letter it now has an estimated readership of over 350,000 readers.
The name of this magazine is the “Beaver”, a small rodent animal, which the Hudson’s Bay Company was given Manitoba to hunt for its Fur.
Today after near extinction the Beaver, the Rodent has been relegated to the endangered species lists, and is only seen on the back of a 5-cent piece.
But the name “Beaver” has been changed by vulgar slang to mean a. The female genitals or b. a woman or a girl.
When search engines encountered the word beaver, home computers would dump it into the Spam basket, or its web site would be viewed for only eight seconds. To elevate the embarrassment of the Winnipeg based publication of the Canada National History Society it will publish its Historical stories starting in the spring under the banner of “Canada’s History.”
Now that the Beaver Brand has passed itself into history, how long will it be before the “Stag” a Shilo publication is forced to follow the same demise?
