and Edward VIII is made King. His reign was short lived because he is forced to abdicate.
Nearly 42-years-old and a bachelor, Edward then made known his desire to marry an American woman named Wallis Warfield Simpson, whom he had known since January 10th 1931.
It is said that he was drawn to Mrs Simpson because she treated him as an equal where as the other women he was involved with placed him on a pedestal. He sought the approval of his family, the Church of England, and the political establishment to marry her, but met with strong opposition.
She had been married twice: her second divorce was still pending, and there were strong suggestions that she had German Political connections and that she may have even been a spy.
This love affair and possible Royal marriage resulted in sensational newspaper headlines around the world and created a storm of controversy, but did not sway Edward. He preferred Mrs Wallis Simpson than the Crown, and so on December 10, 1936, King Edward VIII submitted his abdication and it was endorsed by Parliament the next day. He thus became the only British monarch ever to resign voluntarily.
In 1919 the future King stopped off for a thirty-minute visit to Brandon. In fact he spent two hours and thirty minutes on Friday October 10th.
He arrived by special train and alighted at the CPR Depot on Pacific Avenue. To mark his visit were band music, and the singing of 3000 flag waving children.
At city hall he met with War wounded and presented medals of Honour to Brandon’s nursing Sisters S. P. Johnstone (Royal Red Cross – first class), Lieutenant E. C. Whitehead (Military Cross), Sergeant J. J. Jackson (Distinguished Conduct Medal) Lieutenant C. G. Kerr (Military Cross) and Elkhorn’s Major R. de Waller (Military Cross).
After the Abdication his younger brother, George VI, took the throne and immediately gave Edward the title, Duke of Windsor. The Duke and Mrs. Simpson were married in France on June 3, 1937 and lived in Exile in Paris.
When Titled the Prince of Wales he fought in Flanders with the Canadian Expeditionary Corps, he laid the cornerstone for the current parliament buildings and was a frequent visitor to the ranch he owned in Pekisko, Alberta.
As King he would unveil the Vimy Memorial in France.
During World War II, Edward served as Governor of the Bahamas.
He died in Paris on May 28, 1972 at age 77. His wife died there, April 24, 1986 at the age of 89.
Casual observers of the Royal family might see a similarity between Prince Charles and Mrs Camilla Bowles, and their love affair is as intricate as the Windsor’s, it is said that they could not marry until after the death of the Queen Mother, Charles Grandmother, and that the Anglican Church, Government and people will never let him be King.
Note: the Queen is head of the Anglican Church, this title is handed down from King Henry VIII who founded this branch of Christianity.
