The Assiniboine Community College was first named the Brandon Vocational Training Centre, and opened on the 6th of February 1961. The first shops, and classrooms were located at 11th Street and Queens Avenue, with additional classrooms at two locations on 10th Street.
It was a bare bones institution with a staff of two Administrators and two Instructors. There were only two courses offered, and only 24 students attended. It was re-named the Manitoba Vocational Training Centre, and it steadily grew, so that by the fall of 1966, students moved into an all-new building at their present location at 1430 Victoria Avenue East.
It had a staff of six administrative personnel, eighteen instructors, and offered 11 different courses to 300 students.
In 1966 the Keewatin Community College of northern Manitoba was founded. Its two main campuses are in the Pas, and Thompson with three regional centres in Swan River, Flin Flon, and Churchill, and in remote communities of the northern parts of the province. They offer academic, Nursing, trades, continuing education, and special programs.
On December 15th, 1969, the three Technical Vocational Schools of Manitoba were changed into Community Colleges. The Manitoba Vocational Training Centre was renamed Assiniboine Community College. The Technical Colleges in Winnipeg and the Pas were renamed the Red River Community College and the Keewatin College respectively.
In 1982 the original Community College building had additional classroom space, heavy duty, general shops, educational support services, Student Association offices, Book Store, and Library were added.
This expansion allowed the college to consolidate its facilities, and abandon its inadequate training space at other Brandon locations. On August 13th 2008 construction started at the former Brandon Mental Health Centre facility on First St. North.
It is called the Len Evans Centre for Trades and Technology with the total cost being estimated to be $45 million. Phase one of the three-phase project is complete.
Phase two involves restoring the existing Pine Ridge Building, and linking it with two new buildings to form a quadrant.
The two new buildings will offer another approximately 90,000 square feet of space in total.
One of the new buildings will house the heavy-duty wing, and the other will house the construction trades wing.
It is anticipated that this portion of the project will be completed in fall 2010.
