April 12, 2004 - CHUM announces the purchase of Craig Media,
4/12/2010 at 7:56 AM
which includes A- Channels Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg and CKX in Brandon.
We now know what a disaster this has turned out to be.
Craig Media was founded in 1948 by Mr. John Craig in Brandon, and began television operations in 1955 under the CKX-TV banner.
The company was based in Brandon, Manitoba, then later moved to Calgary, Alberta with Drew Craig, the grandson of John Craig, as its CEO.
Craig Media was the owner of the original A-Channel system: CKX, a CBC affiliate, in Brandon, Manitoba: Toronto One, local television station located in Toronto: and three digital television specialty channels: MTV Canada (now Razer), MTV2 (now PunchMuch) and TV Land Canada.
In January 2004, Craig Media's broadcasting assets went up for sale to pay for loans that were called.
On April 12, 2004, CHUM Limited announced a deal to purchase Craig Media's broadcasting assets for $265 million. The sale was approved by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission on November 19, 2004, and was completed on December 1 of that year.
With the subsequent takeover of CHUM in 2007, most of Craig's former broadcasting assets — excluding the A-Channel stations, now Citytv, which are now owned by Rogers Media — are now owned by CTVglobemedia.
In February 2009, CTV announced that CKX-TV was up for sale, as CBC would not continue its affiliation agreement. In July 2009, it was announced that Bluepoint Investment Corporation would buy the station for one dollar. However, Bluepoint pulled out of the sale on October 1, resulting in the station's closing a day later.
The production assets and Film Library was donated to the Assiniboine Community College.
CHUM did not acquire Craig's telecommunications operations, which remain in operation under the Craig Wireless name.
Craig Wireless was founded by John's grandson, Boyd Craig.
