Mrs. Eleanor Maude Kidd. (1882 - July 11th 1978) Brandon’s first animal rights activist dies.
Mrs Kidd was born in London England in 1882 where she trained as a nurse at the Liverpool Children’s Hospital. She immigrated to Italy where she worked as a private duty nurse to aristocratic families.
In 1913 she immigrated to Canada, and settled in Portage la Prairie, Winnipeg, and The Pas, finally choosing to reside in Brandon.
Mrs. Kidd spent her life caring for abused animals. She founded the Brandon Humane Society where she worked for 20 years without remuneration, fund raising, and caring for stray animals.
Sometime in the mid-nineteen twenties she married Mr. William Wesley Kidd, a Barber who was born in Palmerston, Ontario on the 29th February 1873.
His Barber Shop was located at 913 Rosser Avenue, and in 1945 their home was 221 - 13th Street. They had one child who died in its infancy. Mr. Kidd died at age 78 in Brandon on the 8th November 1951.
In 1973 Mrs. Kidd moved into the Fairview Home where she spent the remaining years of her life. She died at age 97 on July 11th 1978.
Mrs Kidd was commemorated in 1977 with the opening of the Eleanor Kidd Gardens located just east of the 18th Street Bridge. These Gardens honour a woman who spent her life caring for a part of our society who are helpless.
Mr. and Mrs. Kidd are interned in the Brandon Cemetery. The epitaph on their Tomb Stone simply reads: “To a Great Lady.”
