George Mutter of Mutters Grocery Store dies November 6th 1970.

George Mutter was born in 1873.
His father was Andrew Mutter, and in 1886 he moved his family of five girls and five boys from Kilmarnock Scotland to Brandon.
At 13 years oh age George needed a job so he started a Grocery store, and one of his brothers, John also started one at Rapid City.
In 1903 George formed a partnership with Mr. C. Lorne Lynch and their store was named: Mutter and Lynch Grocery Store.
Mutter and Lynch, shared duties, Lynch was in charge of storing the daily cash in the safe, but he never told Mutter the combination, when he went east on a trip, Mutter had to leave the vault door open, and the contents of the safe were stolen.
On a Sunday in 1906 the caretaker of the Caledonian Rink, Mr. Robert McKelvie allowed Mr. William Sutherland to warm himself. Later it was discovered that the Ice Palace refreshment room had been forcibly entered.
Police Chief Boyd soon located a suspect, and charged him with break and enter. He also charged him with the several months old Mutter and Lynch safe robbery. Mr. Sutherland pleaded guilty and received two years less a day.
Within a few years Mr. Lynch was forced to retire because of ill health and so brother John joined the Brandon Store located at 928 Rosser Avenue.
Mutters Grocery Store was located at 924 Rosser Avenue from 1903 – 1975, (72 years). The store had an unusual design: it was from 12 to 14 feet wide, with its walls at approximately the same height.

The Mutters grew their own vegetables as well as receiving daily deliveries from local Market Gardeners.
George married Miss. Maud Elizabeth Dobbie from Lanark County Ontario. They had one son Fred, and they lived at 2108 Rosser Avenue their Phone number was #1166.
Maud was born in 1876, and died at age 57 in Brandon 22nd July 1933.
After his marriage, George started bringing in Maple Syrup from Ontario to sell in the store.
George was in charge of the Produce: and had a flourishing produce market: he retired in 1953.
George Mutter died in Brandon 6th November 1970.
Maud and George are buried in Brandon Cemetery.
John Mutter was born in 1876 and died 10th November 1960 and is also buried in the Brandon Cemetery.
