I'm doing a bit of research on a Winnipegger who was killed in 1914 in the war. My research took me to the memorial statue for CPR employees who were killed in action.
I've passed this statue many times but never took the time to see it up close and personal. It's really very beautiful and does feel as if it's actually going to take off and rise to the heavens. Because of the way the faces and limbs are situated you see something different from every angle.
The CPR commissioned three of the statues, called "Winged Angel", from Montreal Sculptor Coeur de Lion MacCarthy to commemorate the 1,116 employees it lost in WWI. Statues were unveiled in 1922 in Winnipeg, Montréal and Vancouver.
The Winnipeg Angel started out at the CPR site at Higgins and Main, had a brief stint at Henry and the Disraeli, then in 1990 was moved to the front lawn of the Deer Lodge Centre on Portage Ave.
The statue was rededicated to commemorate CPR employees killed in both World Wars and Korea.
