Can I divide perennials I just bought from the greenhouse?

I have a lot of flower gardens to fill, and am looking for ways to do it 'on the cheap'. I'm thinking mostly grasses, and other larger plants. Can I divide them right from the pot after buying from the greenhouse? I've tried researching this on the internet, but it mostly just tells you how to divide plants (which I'm already familiar with). Thanks in advance for any advice!
