i am looking for some weight for my truck for the winter months-would like sandbags or railties.  
just wondering where i could find either.

Rail ties you could likely try Cando, not sure about sandbags.

I would go with sandbags. Rail ties are very bulky and really not that heavy for their size. Sandbags I have bought at gas stations. My last ones I got from 7-11.

If you use sand bags, you can always use some of the sand when and where you need it. The Boy Scouts used to sell them from the Petro Canada stations.

Think this through- if there were a collision (maybe the oncoming vehicle doesn't have as good traction), do you really want railway ties or large ice blocks coming through your truck cab? Sand seems the most sensible option.

I use softener salt as I have a softener. As the bags have handles - they are easy to unload and reload after if you need to haul something else in the bag of the truck.

I use softener salt as well. My truck has pockets in the side walls for 2x4's so I put one in front of the wheel well and one behind. It keeps the bags right over the axle and keeps them from sliding around.

patio slabs?

I have used Patio Blocks for years, But make up a frame out of lumber just so they won't move on you...the 24 x 30 blocks weigh 105lbs, so I used 2...

sand bags and salt bags can be used when stuck so i have used those but putting cement slabs in doesnt impede your room for other loads, I assume you will put them in the trunk so that should be sufficient for accident protection, if its a truck then i filled with snow but thats a pain when you want to haul something but less lethal in an accident, technically you need to secure the other items in a truck for that reason but here many dont and no one gets a ticket either but it is something to consider if you were to roll ect

Just wondering, if you add 200 pounds what effect would it have on the amount of gas used?  
Yes, I understand the weight helps with operating the vehicle.

you are moving more weight so yes you will get worse millage, how much would depend on how much weight and what vehicle, still tho some vehicles are way better to spend a touch more in gas in the winter then the cost of an accident or missing work because your car cant get there
