I cannot comment on suitably of your area. I live in town of OakLake.
Technically you are talking about a WellPoint. The accepted slang is standpoint. In our area these are the primary water source. In my yard I wanted to put down a second point to use exclusively to water my yard and garden. I borrowed a 3 inch auger and drilled down to water. There are seams of clay even in our sand. I drilled several holes where I could see and hear water running but it was clay which clogged up the screens.
I drilled in excess of twenty feet down. I kept moving over ten feet each time. I installed a point ten feet down and have a good enough supply to run three sprinklers simultaneously. What I'm trying to say you may be in a swamp and your neighbours might have working points. If you are in clay a well may be your only option.
