    Are river mussels edible?

    I found what I believe to be a huge mussel (maybe a clam??) while exploring by the Assiniboine river the other day up near Holland. I googled, trying to find pics of the one that I found, but nothing. I was wondering if they are in fact edible, Any thoughts or comments on this would be a help...thanks!!

    Found in fresh water lakes and rivers. I suppose you could eat it after cooking but I’ve never heard of anyone eating them.

    My guess would be not a good idea. They are filter feeders and seeing as you got them from the Assiniboine, there may be a chance they are toxic just from the water they use for their own food.  
    Don’t know this for a fact, just an educated guess.
