Slow Cooker mushy mess!

I have a Rival Slow cooker. I used it a couple times lately to save time for after work, however, the recipes are basically mush when the cooking is done. I did a chicken and rice recipe as well as a chicken and sweet chili sauce. I do find it is too hot even on the low setting.
Is this the result of food cooked in slow cookers? Should I get another brand?
