Ripening Pears ?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get pears to ripen ? I got about half a milk grate of pears from a friend that has pear trees in their yard. Not sure what kind they are - some are about 4" tall and 3" around and the others are 2"-3" tall and about 2" around - green and some have a bit of red on them. The people I got them said they tried putting them in a dark place, covering them and putting them with various other fruits and veggies and still cannot get them to ripen. If they do ripen it is from the inside out and are rotten in the middle. I would like to eat some of them and some I would like to can or make jam.
Any ideas ?
