I have some experience in this area  
 
Pretty much walk into the show cause hearing and say " I accept responsibility for my actions, how long are you going to suspend my license?"  
 
They will go through each one of your tickets/accidents and ask you details and you have an opportunity to give your side of the story. The MPI employees that work there are quite easy to talk to but also have todo their job.  
 
If they like your attitude they will send you to the defensive driving course and keep your license on probation. if you have already been ordered to take the course in the past then you'll be looking at an automatic suspension.  
 
Also, don't mention undue hardship by losing your license. Its not their job to factor in loss of employment or driving your kids to daycare, they will tell you the same if you try and take that route. If you truly have undue hardship they will still suspend your license then you can apply for a worker permit which you go before panel board of people and they decide if they will give you a permit and which conditions that get attached to it.

Unfortunately the bad drivers or ones with infractions raise all our costs. Look at the amount for bikes. The people that drive like idiots and do wheelies are the ones in hospital for days and raise our rates.

excuse me but some slow drivers I see are bad drivers and some seniors are still driving on the street and should reassess on their driving.  
Let's not hit all speeders, not because they speed that they are all bad drivers.

im curious, what was your angle to get the surcharge reduced or removed? i always thought if you couldnt afford it you just didnt get a license

The application form can be picked up at the MPI building on 1st street. The cost is $10 to apply. Mail a cheque in with your application. If you are not able to afford the surcharge, or simply don't agree with the amount you will simply put "unduly harsh" under the column reason for filing. You will be contacted and a time will be setup for an interview via teleconference. Its usually a board of 3 members. Each one of them will ask you various questions, from prior convictions to your personal situation such as kids, marital status, etc.. With your explanation of why you are in your current situation combined with the information they gather about you, they will make a decision of whether a discount will be granted. Their decision is final. There is no reappealing. You will receive a letter 7-10 days from the date of the phone interview. If you are successful you're refunded the $10. If not it costs an extra $25 for you. IMHO it is risk vs reward and it's worth the risk. I've used it twice. The first time i had $500 knocked off and the second time another $400. Also to mention though, if you are given a break and received a discount, if you have another infraction within a years time you start from scratch again. Hope this helps. "
