My laptop keeps freezing up

My Acer Travelmate 2310 keeps freezing up completely on me and the only thing that'll work is the mouse I have attached to it. The only way I can get it to work is to unplug it and soon after a critical battery level message will come on and everything will come unfrozen for a little while again. The running program on it is Windows XP Professional. If anyone has any suggestions on what the problem might be I would really love to hear them.
