14,000 Unique Visitors?

This post is simply a question and is not in any way intended to rip on the original poster. I recently read that this web page received 14,000 unique hits in a single day and broke its previous record, yet the little counter on the top of the page never exceeds more than 100 members on in the last hour.
100 x 24 = 2400. So where do the other 11,600 come from? I am sure there is a logical explanation for this. Just curious. Thanks!
