Does anyone use this in Brandon. How is the service? is the quality good?

We use it but when we go on hot holidays to keep I touch with the kids and grandparents back home. Works great. You need to warn people tho that the number is random and may appear as a telemarketer. As long as wifi is good you shouldn't have a problem.

Great. I've had mine as a home phone with a Manitoba number for about 5yrs. Saves lots of money.

Magic Jack will save you a lot of money if you make a lot of long distance calls on a regular basis. It's only as good as your internet is so if your internet goes down a lot you won't be able to make or receive calls during that time. Or if your internet gets really slow it will affect call quality as well.You do get a random number that you can choose but if you want it to be a Canadian number I believe that costs an extra 10 bucks. But once you have that number it should remain your number as long as your account remains active. There are other ways to get VOIP (Voice Over Internet protocol) service as well but Magic Jack is probably the cheapest.

Whenever I need to make a long distance phone call in north america I just use the chat on the left sidebar in my GMail account. You would need a microphone and speakers - though a headset is better - buts it's free and quality is great.  
 
Sorry I don't have any experience with receiving calls or how it may be possible.

We have an Obi200 from Obihai.  
 
We can call anyone in North America using Google Talk with a regular phone plugged into it. We can also use up to three other VOIP providers: currently using ANVEO for voip with a $50/year Canada Wide plan. (Winnipeg Number)  
 
The Obi box is not tied to any particular provider and seems to work well. Watch for a sale on amazon.ca or on newegg.ca

My mom uses Viber with her cell phone all the time, especially when she's in California or to call their friends in Australia. The other person also needs to have Viber (it's a free app), but it uses the wifi connection to make the call for free. She loves it!
