My video card (ASUS GTX-660) is connected via HDMI to my Yamaha RX-V375 receiver. Should I be able to get sound to the receiver via the HDMI connection? I was under the impression that one of the characteristics of the HDMI standard is that sound and video travel over the same connection.

Is this a new tv you are hooking up to? What year is your TV and what year is your receiver.

I found this on the internet. If all else fails call the support line for Asus.

I am extremely pleased to report that after spending 30 minutes on the phone with the wonderful folks at Nvidia Tech Support my problem has been resolved.  
 
The problem was with the resolution settings. I originally used Windows - Display - Screen Resolution to set my resolution when I should have used the Nvidia Control Panel instead.  
The tech was able to determine that my audio was only working on 720p resolution and not the correct 1024x768 resolution because I had not set my resolution using the Nvidia Control Panel. I opened up the Nvidia Control Panel, selected and set my desired resolution and now everything is working great. I now have a crystal clear HD display with audio via HDMI.  
One thing to note: the tech did have me open up Device Manager and disable the on board audio device so that the only active audio device is Nvidia. Although this was not the solution, it was a step that the tech had me go through.  
I hope this information can help somebody in the future.

Go into control panel and click on sound and try changing the device driver.

According to WDM, the vVidia High Definition Audio device is enabled, but looking at the playback devices in sound properties, the system reports the device as not plugged in. What am I missing here?

If you look at the screenshots, the system is recognizing that there is HDMI HD audio present, but at the same time it believes that the device isn't connected.

did you try right clicking on the hdmi icon and enabling it or try rebooting the computer.

you have a bad hdmi cable or you need to install or update the drivers for your sound card.

I had this issue when connecting my laptop to my tv. I had to make sure to plug the hdmi cable first into my laptop than to my tv. If it was connected to my tv first the sound wouldn't come through.

As per suggestions, I uninstalled the sound card that was in my PC leaving just the video card HDMI output as audio source. The system reports the device as enabled on port 0, but "not plugged in' on ports 1-3. A message to ASUS support left me with their reply that this card doesn't have audio drivers. If so, what are the High Definition Audio devices seen in the tree view of WDM?

right click on the hdmi that has the green circle by it and click on properties and see if it is enablrd and you could also try updating the drivers or uninstalling them and reboot so they reinstall.  
 
Do you have speakers hooked up to your computer or a headphone jack to see if you can get sound that way. That would help determine if it is just the hdmi part that isn't working or the sound card,

Have you tried bypassing the receiver to see if it works?
