Relationship between authorities and the media
8/3/2008 at 11:01 AM
The Greyhound bus incident from last week has brought to the forefront a relationship that can be controversial at the best of times- that between the authorities and the news media.
In recent days we've heard jabs at both sides- at the media for digging to find as much information as possible on the crime and those involved
...and at the authorities for being slow at releasing details.
That brings up an important question. How far should the obligation of the RCMP, police, etc extend when it comes to informing the public.. not just in this high profile case, but with crime in general?
Other than obvious situations where releasing information would jeopardize an investigation, should authorities be expected to answer as many questions as reasonable so as to keep the public informed? Is there a point where there is certain information that we should not know or don't need to know (or that should not be released out of respect to those related to people effected by a crime)?
