$16 Million for at-risk youth....
1/11/2007 at 4:04 PM
I seen the notice this morning on Canada-AM that Stockwell Day was going to announce some monies for at-risk youth in Winnipeg today. Being a formal youth worker by occupation, I was a little disappointed in the "big" announcement when it finally came out.
Apparently there is $16 million being allocated to go towards agencies and programs that are addressing the issues of youth involved with "gangs, guns and drugs". I am happy to see money being made available, but I am disappointed that $16 million is the amount. If each province AND territory was to receive an equal share (hypothetically) that would only amount to $1.23 million each?
Of course, this funding is going to be up for grabs where these agencies and community groups are going to have to step forward with their existing programs or new ones, in order to receive any funds, across the country.
I personally, (IMO), don't feel or believe this amount is going to be sufficient. Most of this money is going to be spent on "wages and financial assistance" in my opinion. I came from an organization and had heard of other org's that had to "scrap" youth programs/workers because the "new" government felt they were not to their liking or standard in service providing.
Just last week, the Fed's announced a Pilot Project in health for Manitoba alone, that was going to be given $3.7 million...
Maybe it is just me, I am pleased to see some dollars being allocated, but for something as serious as DRUGS, GANGS and GUNS...lets be real, Urban Centers like Toronto/Vancouver/Montreal and yes Winnipeg are going to be eating all that cash up in no time...(IMO). Just thought I would share this and see what others may think?
