The proposed smoking ban
11/21/2007 at 11:23 AM
(as in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, has to start somewhere)
in vehicles that are transporting children doesn’t seem to be a viable position. I agree with the stance taken: to protect the health of minors trapped in enclosed quarters with adults who seem to be incapable of comprehending the fact that they doing untold damage to those who have no alternative. As long a cigarettes are a legal commodity readily purchased and taxed by the government then you can hardly ban the use of it. Also when does it become illegal to smoke in your own home where children reside? We ban drinking and open liquor in vehicles but that is because the consumption impairs ones thought and muscle processes, smoking tobacco does not. It is illegal for adults to supply minors with alcohol, but you are allowed to provide alcohol to your own children within the confines of your home, I have however, never heard of fumes from a liqour bottle to do great bodily harm to non-drinkers. Liquor is also a legal and taxed item. Hey, maybe it’s not such a far- fetched idea after all or not. I guess what I end up thinking is that until tobacco is made illegal the growing, selling and smoking of it your going to have a problem. And then of course if that happens there will be someone standing on street corners dealing in cancer sticks and making a tidy profit off you instead of the government! Might not common sense prevail, use your freedom of choice and curb your smoking around children who if given their freedom of choice would not be the unwilling recipient of your habit?
