how to keep my dog in the yard ??

we have a pup that every time we drive out of the yard he wants to follow our vehicle,we live in the country close to a main road, i dont want him run over, so im wondering if an electronic collar and a wire across the lane would work,???? any help apreciated. I also dont want to have to tie him up all day while were away.
