Calling the police for a cat trap

This morning while enjoying my breakfast a huge orange striped fluffy cat walked up to the deck door and stared in at me. I stared back at it and eventually it went down the deck but stopped a few feet later and looked back at the deck door. This cat was NOT wearing a collar nor any tags I could see through the window. I phoned animal control and asked them to drop off a trap at our back door.
Much as I would have loved to have let it in it would have taken that as an invitation. Whoever its owner is if they loved it would have made sure it had a way to go back into its home not leave it wandering into strange yards.
It has not been the first cat I have seen. Our street has many stray cats.
