My solution was to ditch the curtains and put up blinds instead. But that's just me.  
 
I usually took the philosophy that I just wouldn't give the cat a chance to engage in undesirable behaviours - no curtains, material on couches no good for scratching, a more desirable climbing/scratching thing put in a prominent place for which the cat got ample praise for using.  
 
Although I could never keep her from scratching the carpeted stairs.

There is a plug-in and/or spray system at Pet Valu. It's $50-$100 I believe but probably cheaper than replacing curtains and furniture. It's supposed to calm the cats as well. Can't remember the name but the cashier can help you. I've heard it works wonders!  

Feliway Spray (safe for fabric and many other surfaces). It's only available at some Vet Clinics in Canada with no prescription. I picked up mine at Brandon Animal Clinic - 2015 Brandon Avenue. Well worth it. It's used for calming, spraying, scratching, anxiety, stress, etc. It's an odourless pump spray containing pheromones that mimics the cats natural pheromones. There are also room diffusers as well (doesn't affect anything but the feline species).  
 
You could spray Feliway on your curtains or any affected areas cats like to scratch or damage.

You could ad a little vinegar to the spray bottle, cats hate the smell, and roll up a couple of pages of newspaper and whack it on the walls or furniture, they also don't like the noise. The vinegar and water is something I use and she now runs when she sees the bottle. You could tie the curtains up when you are going out.
