You don't want a shelter in town with barking dogs. If your animal should find its way there and it's too far away, you likely aren't committed enough to have the pet in the first place.

The pound is 3 miles from 18th Street. If it gets any closer people would complain about the barking dogs.

thats the best place for them , tons of room to run them and be animals not cramped up, and totally agree with RainaRo and Ta! If its too far maybe not have your pet loose so it goes there??

If someone can't drive 3 miles to get their pet, they don't deserve the pet in the first place.

There are many issues as to why the pets are not picked up in a timely manner.  
 
Cost: It is expensive to bail the pet out of jail and that amount increases for every day that it is there. Waiting for payday may add a couple of hundred dollars to the tab, making it more difficult to get they out. Is there a way pay the fines at a later date but get the pet out now?  
 
Cannot afford to have the pet spayed or neutered so far too many are brought into this world. One solution would be to have reduced rate spay surgeries once a month. $125-$150 does not sound like much except when that is the amount for a week of groceries or the monthly utility bill. But the advantages of having a cat or dog can be priceless, but expensive for those that do not have room in their budget for this surgery.  
 
The distance may be a problem but there are plenty of friends that would be willing to drive the owner to retrieve the family pet - if the owner admitted they made a mistake and asked for help to rectify it. The owner has to decide if they can afford the $20 taxi or to swallow their pride and ask for help.

I see on BALA on a fairly regular biases that the pound is full. I understand it's only 3 miles out but not everyone has transport and sometimes it's not the owners fault. I just feel horrible that hard decisions have to be made so often. It's why I posed the question what can the community do to help? I know the regular spay/ neuter your pet is number 1 plus we have a great TNR program. But what more can we do. Not to mention finding the place was not easy.

I know it's not always the owners fault their cat or dog ends up in the pound but I know some people let their cats out to hunt.  
If people want to help you could always volunteer to foster a cat for a no kill rescue so they can take more out of the pound.  
I was out there today and there so many cuddly cats there right now and young. So adopt a cat instead of getting a free kitten off of some site that is going to cost you more than an adoption fee.  
There are a couple of suggestions I'm sure there are lots more. The pound has been in that location for 30 years at least and you can find them on Google maps very easily

If you drive down Patricia Ave heading west 3 Miles and you see a sign for animal boarding you might just put 2 and 2 together.

It's a no-brainer. Phone them or animal control and ask for directions if you don't know where it is. Everybody has a cell phone these days.  
Obviously it has to be on the outskirts of the city.  
Instead of whining about it being hard to find, just be thankful your pet is safe and being cared for.  
Enough said.

We just got a pomeranian from the pound. Very loving dog with some minor behavioural issues. Owners were contacted, don't know why they wouldn't claim him. As Katwalk said, maybe a payment system so they could get their animals right away and not run up bills would help?

Can Google list multiple names for a building? On Google maps the Brandon Humane Society is nicely marked on the map. Can something have multiple names attached to it?

Not sure what you guys are typing in but I just typed in Brandon Boarding Kennel and the Marker is right where the kennels are. I've used it more than once and sent it to people so they could find where the kennels are.  
To get your pet back its not a lot of money if you pick it up right away. You should know if your pet is missing within 24 hours since they aren't supposed to be roaming the city.

If you don''t know it is called Brandon Boarding Kennel and simply look for the brandon city pound it does not have the same information. When BALA posts regarding the pound they say the Brandon Pound and that is what I Google. Sure it happens to more than me. Thanks Katwalk.

Surprisingly a lot of people don't know there is a big difference between the pound and the Humane Society. Does anyone know how long dogs are kept at the pound before they are "put down."

So I click on the link and it opens up 4 kennel locations. When animal bylaw picks up an animal do they take it to one of the 4 places? I know if I have an animal ever go missing my simplest solution would be to call the non emergency police line and talk to animal control.

I do agree with some of the points you've made, I have to say I think it's naive to believe that everyone has a friend or family member nearby they can call & ask for help, or a ride. For many people this is simply not the case.  
 
I know personally in my younger days I have made the walk to the pound to retrieve my cat that escaped, and it sucked! Yes at 18 in the middle of the summer I could do it & that cat liked to leash walk so non issue, but in many cases it would simply not be possible.  
 
Not to mention finding a cab that will let you bring an animal is some days actually impossible so not a real option even if you "can afford the $20". As someone with a parent that doesn't drive & has tried to take her cat to the vet (in carrier) via cab, I can tell you it's VERY hit and miss! Some days you can call every company in town & no one will have a driver willing to allow an animal, some days you get lucky. She now just makes her appointments 1-2 months in advance so I can book off work and drive her to avoid the whole mess.

The city of Brandon pound is located at the Brandon boarding kennels.

Does anyone know how long dogs and cats are kept at the pound before they are euthanized?

From what I hear they will only euthanize if it's full and more are coming in. Usually a rescue steps up and takes them before that happens but rescues are pretty full right now to.  
It also depends on the health, tempermant and age of the animal once it becomes owned by the city when they are full.

Anyone can suggest edits to Google if a marker is placed incorrectly (Which I just did) if you google Brandon Animal Pound it will show you on Google Maps where it is located which happens to be the same place as Brandon Boarding Kennels

this is me - I thought the "Pound" was south of the city - around the 17 St E bypass - I think more "advertising" could be done - I strongly support in educating the public - and I also wonder about the time line of when dogs/animals are "put down". . . can we adopt from both the Pound and the Humane Society??? How are they different? Who funds these??? and why are there 4 markers for the Pound???

Just in case anyone was wondering, BALA actually gives rides to anyone who needs it out to the Brandon Pound!

I didn't know about the ride program and probably not many other people. I'm happy to see that this post got some attention I'd take more cats but my partner is already calling me a crazy cat lady with 3

My only experience with the pound was about three years ago. My son and his girlfriend went to the pound to get a puppy and came home with three. They were told they were going to be put down the next day. My son is the kind of guy who also wanted to find homes for the older dogs on death row but knew he just could not do it. I believe it cost $20 per dog but if course that doesn't cover anything like needles, neutering etc. It is really too bad there is still such a place.

The pound, Humane Society and Funds For Furry Friends are all different rescues. Humane Society and Funds For Furry Friends rely on donations and they are a non profit organization. They also rely on foster homes. Funds for Furry friends doesn't have a kennel location and rely heavily on foster homes. You can go online for the two organizations and see what is available to adopt or you can travel out to the pound and see what they have. All three have their own board and rules they follow for adopting. All three are great to deal with!
