I just got back from Vancouver a few days ago and took my dogs for a run out of the city where several people do the same - I try to make sure my dogs have no contact with the other dogs and their respective owners. Now they have a canine cough which they must have contracted at that location.  
 
I''m just wondering if anyone else out there has the same problem with their dog(s) persistently coughing like they are choking on something..  
 
I read somewhere recently that Winnipeg is having an issue with this highly contagious dog ailment and just want to gauge the incidence rate in Brandon.

I have heard of this a lot in the last couple of days. One person said both of their dogs were sick with it and today I heard of another person''s dog. It can be very dangerous from what I understand. One person reported their dog coughing up blood...then the other dog got sick.  
I understand that it is air borne so you can''t really keep dogs away from it. If you are walking and go past or behind a dog that has it that yours can catch it that easily.  
I just called my vet and mine have both been vaccinated (thank goodness)...apparently that is 100% either. I think it is a yearly shot for them.  
My dogs love to walk in the evening but I am kind of nervous about taking them out until this is under control. If one of mine catches it the other one will for sure as they are NEVER apart. Kind of scary.

For young and older dogs, kennel cough can be dangerous but for healthy mature dogs it usually lasts 7-21 days - like a cold in humans. I don't usually get them vaccinated for kennel cough but I think maybe I will now.

either stay away from dog parks, doggie day cares, etc, or use extreme caution. For the small fee, the preventative vaccine is worth it to save a lot of suffering, heartache, and money in the long run.

Yes, it is a shot that you should get on a yearly basis.

The vaccine for kennel cough is called bordetella. My dog gets it every year with his other immunizations. Its optional but I've always chosen to get it for him because he is around other dogs at the kennel, groomers, dog park, doggie daycare, etc.

Can not stress the importance of vaccinating your dog(s) if they frequent dog parks, kennels, play rooms etc..We use the intra-nasal Bordetella vaccine yearly on our dogs. Someone brought their dog with kennel cough to the park a few weeks ago after being in a kennel. It is very contagious. My dogs were at the park and caught the illness. They both got very sick

My dogs were coughing and threw up a couple of times for two weeks. They caught it from the dog park. Yes, it is contagious and airborne. Just like a cold or flu, you let it go through for 7-21 days

There are many many things that can cause kennel cough, one article I read listed 40, the vaccine only treats 2 of them.  
Your dog has a cold.  
Next time your vet offers you the vaccine, ask if they know any dog that has ever had lasting damage from kennel cough and then ask about the risks of the vaccine.

A cold? Not according to the vet.

I was wondering if anyone had heard any more about this. I know it takes some time for dogs who have it to get over it but I was wondering about new cases. Has anyone heard anything? I want to get my dogs out of the yard this weekend but don't want to take risks if I don't have to. How long will we have to be on the look out for this virus? Because my dogs are young and active I like to socialize them on our walks but this has me second guessing that. Maybe from now on I adjust my path so that they aren't in close proximity with other dogs. Boo...they are always excited to see their friends on our walks.

Unfortunately it is still going around. My dog now has it, just started within the past couple of days: and he was at a boarding kennel 10 days ago.  
 
 
Most people only get the oral vaccine for their dog for Bordatella because it is less expensive: however I've heard from multiple sources that the other option - I think something like a nasal spray - is much more protective - which I never even knew there was a different option.

Our dog has it now as well. He started with symptoms about 3-4 days after coming home from a boarding kennel. I will be keeping him in our house and yard for a while now, because it sounds like there is a doggy gastro bug going around right now as well, and I don't have time for that. He is getting older as well, so I will not be risking anything.

Our dog got it too from a quick visit to the dog park I'm guessing. Called vet right away and got in the next day after a sleepless night of intense coughing fits every half hour. The next day vet prescribed a doggy codeine that suppressed the cough and let her have a good rest. Symptoms were then way less frequent and not near as intense. After 2 days meds no longer required as symptoms were even less frequent and less intense. My advice is get in to the vet as soon as you can before pneumonia sets in if it already hasn't.

I prefer to be safe rather than sorry with my little bundles of fur. I will do anything I can to protect them from illness or danger. They are my babies.  
They say that children don't need vacines either but I would do anything to protect my child (I don't have any) as well.

My dog caught the cough from the dog park a few weeks ago. The first week, she was coughing non-stop and throwing up. She finally got better after two weeks. My other dog who doesn’t go to the dog park caught it from her but it was mild. She was only coughing for a few days and threw up once or twice. It is airborne contagious and I think the illness is still going around

Article never said no vaccines, it said most vaccines don’t need to be given as often as Local vets give them.  
As for loving our little darlings, the article says over vaccination through repeated vaccinations that are not required is actually dangerous.

How much does it cost to have titres done (blood work), and do all vet clinics offer it?
