Have been advised to put our senior gal on Deramax tabs for arthritis.  
This med is pricey. Would like to know of other experience with it.  
50 mg/24 hrs is the recommendation. Has it worked for you paw-pet?

We used Metacam (liquid suspension) and put it in our dogs food as an antiflamatory. The animal clinics in Brandon didn’t stock this at the time. I would purchase 6 months worth from the Minnedosa Veterinary Clinic. Worked great in combination with the liquid suspension glucosamine and chondroitin oral medications we also purchased to assist with the symptoms of arthritis. The dosage required was based on the weight of the dog.

We used metacam for our 11 year old lab and it worked good for her. Grand valley has it in stock.

Deramax, Metacam and Rimadyl are all Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) that are commonly used to treat arthritic pain in senior pets, due to their effectiveness and relative safety for long term use. That being said, some pets respond better to one over the other. Likely your vet started you on the deramax as it tends to be slightly cheaper on a per day basis than the other two. If that one does not work for your pet it would be recommended to try one of the other ones. All vet clinics in town will carry at least one form of NSAID, and can order you in the other ones if needed.

In my dog Metacam caused acute kidney failure and he was 2 weeks in a 24 hour a day acute care hospital flushing out his system in hopes to reverse the kidney damage which thankfully it did, and at a hefty price. So please be careful when taking advice on medications for your dog as one doesn't work for everyone, just like people. Best to get advice from your veterinarian and ask the possible side effects of any medication and weigh the risks. Metacam was vet recommended and I still had this happen so it's a tough choice sometimes. There's a product called Cosequin you could ask your vet about which is glucosamine and condroitin which is a natural supplement and see if that could work instead of a medication. Regardless of what you give them, just consult with your vet first. This was vet recommended product for my dog after the Metacam fiasco and he's better than ever now. Good luck.

I had both my senior girls on this and found it really helped them.

I highly doubt that the Minnedosa Vet Clinic (or any other reputable clinic) would just sell you a large quantity of Metacam without a thorough check-up and review of your dog's medical records.  
Good luck with your senior dog, like us, they require extra care in later years and with it comes expense, but they are worth every cent.

We house 4 senior dogs. XL Breeds (130lbs-195lbs). Buying 6months worth of medication is equivalent to 2-3months worth depending on the time of year. In the Winter months our dogs require increased dosing, extra comfort including heated dog beds.

Metacam, have you tried giving glucosamine? I buy the tablets at wal mart. My boy has one at breakfast and one at supper. I noticed a huge difference! He has osteoarthritis (diagnosed at 2).
