Just toured past Petro Canada on North Hill, gas has jumped to 124.9 there for regular, would assume the rest are about to follow suit.

Fas Gas a few minutes ago was 120.9, Coop was still at 109.9.

just heard on the news this morning that oil is at a six year low and we are still paying ridiculously high prices at the pumps so damned frustrating. Check out this link for the cheapest gas prices around the world.

how fast gas goes up like almost instantly when something in the supply chain has a bad day but it takes weeks or more to go down once the problem has been corrected if ever.

I guess that refinery must produce 13.6% of the gas in Canada.

Because when the price is supposed to down, the sympathizers will say it's because the gas in the stations holding tanks was paid for at a higher price so they have to use all that before the price bottoms out again.  
Seems strange that only works when it comes to lowering the price, not raising it no?

to think of what a liter of gas will be if oil ever goes back up to the $118.00 a barrel range again.

Gas prices may go up but the gas prices here in Brandon in my opinion are an opportunity for a little extra cash in the pockets for a few select companies from charging a few more cents a litre at the pump. I understand these companies give you the reason of extra travel costs for delivery to Brandon and the fuel is previously purchased at a higher prices but what happens when they buy more fuel after that previously purchased prices passes through storage and the tanks now have the new purchased gasoline at the cheaper prices? Still in Brandon, prices are higher than everywhere else.  
 
Do we not live in a society where if something sits on a shelf long enough no matter your margin the price drops by ownership to move the products? Look at retail with seasonal market trends and some margins they face at times when they are forced to make decisions to discount items throughout the year because of weather.  
 
Is it disappointing how 80Km's away it is cheaper and even 200Km's away it is even 3-8 cents less a litre. If you don't know who this/these companies is/are then do some research and find out, it won't take you long.  
 
Gasoline is a needed item for most and fuel needs to move not sit in businesses tanks. You want to keep gas prices lower avoid the big corporate companies and purchase your fuel from smaller companies. Find out who these smaller companies are we have here and start a trend/possible price war at the pumps here, stop chattering, avoid the convenience of what is close to your house for the corporate company, avoid using that extra promotional point card you have as it will launch more promotions if you stop going, avoid the convenience of what's close for some, avoid that extra $1.20 you get off at the grocery store and do something about it. It all adds up. You think they don't have budgets and expectations to meet quota's and sales as well? Don't kid yourself, even the smallest purchases can make a difference.  
 
Quite possibly people just don't care either and will pay whatever the price of gas is because they have point cards, promotional coupons or feel it is what it is.

Just heard on the radio that gas was going up 7 cents a litre to 109.9. Just stands to reason that us rich people in Brandon should have it go up 15 cents a litre.  
 
Everyone should just boycott Petro Canada as they are the ones who jump the price ASAP and as high as possible, 26th street and Victoria is 124.9 right now.

I spoke with someone in the industry. There isn't a whole lot of money going into the marketers that you think. Go and look at a Petro pump and there usually is a breakdown of how the money is distributed. Guess who gets the biggest chuck out of gas.....No surprise it is the government. Nobody says let's boycott the government. Maybe they could give us a break on taxes instead. But the more it goes up the more they get.

The reason gas prices continue to go up while oil goes down is fairly simple.  
 
As oil goes down, or dollar collapses against the USD. We import most of our refined gas from the USA.  
 
So as our dollar goes down it cost more to buy refined gas from the USA.  
 
So the USA benefits from a collapse in oil price because they can buy it cheap. But we don't see much if any savings because we are buying refined gas back with our devalued dollar.  
 
On a side note: This is the issue that Mulcair wishes to fix by creating a refinery instead of a pipeline. At least if we have a massive new refinery our refined gas will be purchased within Canada and we will see the benefit from the falling oil prices.

Canada produces more than enough oil to be self-sufficient, but we export it because we don't have the refinery capacity to process the raw product into something useful. If government wants to subsidize the fossil fuel industry, why are they promoting the extraction and export of oil instead of refining?

For the record, gas is sold on consignment. They keep a record of when the gas was sold and they are billed for the price of the fuel at the time it was sold, it is literally down the minute on how they get billed for it so out of a thousand litres in the tank they could pay a range of prices for the fuel as it moves up and down for price at the pumps

I don't think the Manitoba govt. jumped their tax overnight. Pure and simple it is the people in the industry you have talked to who are jumping the price. Now apparently using the excuse that a refinery broke down.

What's really concerning is that a lot of people don't understand the metric system. When gas goes up 15 cents a litre that calculates to 75 cents a gallon. 10 gallons of gas is now $7.50 more than the station down the street charging 109.9. Amazingly there are people young and old still filling up at Petro Canada, I guess they have to much money.

Thanks Op, you might've just saved me almost $5! Had been putting off filling up because of a Sobeys/Shell coupon and almost waited too long  
 
Not sure how many stations are following suit right away... All within the last 15 minutes or so, none of these stations that I was by were posting any increase:  
Shell on 18th  
Coop on 6th  
Superstore  
Husky 18th between the bridges  
Coop 18th  
Safeway  
Shell, highway

Petro, highway was at 124.9.....

are a complete farce. A small town gas station that we visit regularly at a lake south of Brandon was a full 10 cents cheaper than town the whole year last summer. I once asked him and he very honestly told me that he makes enough at that price but that the distributors were leaning hard on him to raise his prices because it made others look bad.

The whole thing is just a money grab and it will only hurt tourism and then the hotels and such will be upset.

Somebody should put a sign up on the highway near this gas station saying gas is 15 cents cheaper in town.

Your reasoning seems to simplistic. When our dollar was above par I don't recall anybody rejoicing about low gas prices. Everyone was heading off to the states for deals and still filling up down there before coming back.  
 
Our dollar has been below 80 cents for quite awhile now and all of a sudden the price jumps overnight by 15 cents. I think companies like Petro Canada and Shell just want some extra cask flow and because they can do it they do jump the price ridiculous amounts. You don't see the U.S. stations jumping 50 cents to 75 cents at a pop.

Yes my previous reply was a bit simplistic, I wanted to keep it high level. But the other reason tied to our dollar is that Gas is global commodity. As our dollar goes down we have to pay more per unit than say the USA whose dollar has gone up.  
 
If both the USD and CDN are a par we pay the same for a unit of gas. But if the USD goes up 10 cents we have to spend a dollar ten to compete for the same unit because we are effectively bidding against them.

But there is no way to avoid it: all else staying equal the lower our dollar goes the more we will pay for gas in a free market.

A couple days ago I posted that Canadian Tire had a gas sale and a liter was $104.9 and people on here just complained that their precious time was worth more than saving $5! So I don't imagine any will have time to drive to rural Manitoba, not that it even makes any sense anyhow.

it is less about the money and more about choosing who to support and if it costs a bit to not support the vultures here in town then so be it. You don't have to travel far to empty the pockets here.

You'll never see any more refineries built. It takes too long and costs way too much to do it. That's why we import so much gasoline. Mulcair can make all the promises he wants but would the government be building it cause the private sector probably won't.  
And the tanking cdn dollar does affect it. Everything is going up because of it.
