Yes, and it smells like burning garbage. It is toxic for people, farm & wild animals alike, and certainly not great when it heads your way and makes me concerned for our animals that have no choice but to breathe it in. They can't move away from it.
I know that most farmers burn twine that is on their weed/straw bales. I know of none who take it off first. That is too much extra work. That twine is plastic, no longer jute as in the old days. I also have wondered what the residual chemicals (in or on the weeds/straw) turn into when burned...that can't be good for health either. Some farmers don't care nor give it a second thought...but just make sure the smoke is headed away from their place. We have lost birds when this smoke has moved into our space. I worry about my family too...but we have no recourse. To talk to those farmers would be fruitless.
I have also seen sheets of plastic (long grain bags) left in fields...saw some just last week, actually, and it has been there for a couple years already.
It is good to hear that there are actually places to take this waste. Hopefully more are responsible, make the effort to take it in, and spread the word. Thank you for posting about that recycling program.
