Air travel to the US

We are traveling by air to the US in one week and are wondering if anybody experienced the new "enhanced security measures" yet?
In particular the "NO carry on" policy.
I was reading up on it on the catsa website and they give very little info.
Our son is 5 and we like to take some toys, perhaps his DS, favourite stuffed pet and a changes of clothes for him in case of an toilet "accident" but don't know if we should as carry on.
Any advise / experience appreciated.
