Winnipeg has started mosquito spraying long ago. Why is it that Brandon every single year is so cheap in their mosquito spraying? I don’t care about the mosquito traps. It’s crazy outside with mosquitoes ruining our summer and making it impossible for children to play outside.

If you haven't ventured down 1st st or 18th st there is flooding going on and they are working on flood protection. That is probably priority to mosquito spraying.

The chemical the city uses to spray for mosquitoes was discontinued years ago and they only have a small amount left. They’re looking into replacement products. They’ve been looking into a replacement product since 2021 mind you. So likely there will be no mosquito fogging this year too.

Amazing strategy this year. With all the rain we've had, it's almost like someone wanted to create the perfect mosquito breeding program. Glad our tax dollars are clearly hard at work... just apparently not for anyone hoping to enjoy being outside this summer.

City is poor! Don't have the funds to do anything with continuous spraying.

With the rain and the hot weather the little buggers have had a population explosion.

According to today's paper there aren't enough in the traps to constitute spraying. Obviously those traps aren't in my back yard. I understand the concept of tracking but can we be pro active on it this year with all the water????  
I cut my lawns last night, it was awful and I was wearing long pants and long sleeves. This morning they seemed even worse.  
I don't understand the lack of planning for this. I completely understand and appreciate all of the hard work the city crews did preparing for the flood. What a great job.  
I don't understand why spraying would be put off if the resources are there.  
Can I also comment on the ridiculous picture in the Brandon Sun of the 3 people "swimming" on a closed space with all of the warnings out there. Almost promoting a tragedy to happen. I hope they are all ok and no resources of emergency crews had to go and save them from someplace they probably shouldn't have been.

It is so bad. Why are they not spraying?

These discussions crack me up. Should we care about the hundreds of innocent children being murdered in Gaza? NAH. Should we care about the hundreds of thousands of innocent people being forced out of their adopted countries? NAH. Closer to home, should we care about the thousands of people affected by the life altering weather events? NAH. Let's just complain about an abundance of mosquitos. Who knows, maybe 2026 will be the "worst" year for mosquitos since the time of the dinosaurs. AND? Should we also complain about the forest fire smoke coming down from the North like it doesn't happen every year, and meanwhile people's houses are going up in flames?  
This world is already messed up enough, but let's complain about a few mosquito bites. Unreal. PERSPECTIVE

There always has to be a Karen- someone who can’t just stay on the subject in question like mosquitoes in Brandon.

This lovely lake is such a nice breeding ground for mosquites that the southern end of Brandon especially houses/apartments close by will be spending their time indoors this summer.  
 
By the way, there is always something else going on in the world, if we worried and fretted over everything, nervous breakdowns would be frequent. Sometimes complaining as you call a little thing; helps us keep sane.  
 
(on another note, realizing should stay on topic, with the lack of fence around lake it is also the site of children drowning in the future. PUT a fence up around it. When will gov't learn.)

I just barely got back home after only a 1/2 mile walk and almost got eaten alive. I would like to gather the council members and city manager to go for a short walk and see what they think about their mosquito counts in these traps they keep referencing. FOR 5 YEARS NOW THEY HAVE SAID WE DON'T HAVE ANY CHEMICAL TO FIGHT THESE BUGGARS. Does anybody in the so-called administration plan for these mosquitos or just after it gets cold and they forget about it until next year. It's time they started. This is becoming a health risk and it's about time council gave one of the high paid administrators the responsibility to do something about this. FORGET ABOUT THE TRAPS THEY ARE ALL B.S.

heres the thing summers are the only thing a lot of us enjoy about this city,walking ,gardening ,sitting in the gazbo,kids at the spray parks its not only good activity it is good for our metal health trust me i know  
so please city of brandon spray today ,we umderstand  
you have a state of emergency but the rest of us need you too..

I just went outside and pulled 3 more big weeds off city boulevard (which I do regularly) and came in with 15 bites for my trouble. I’m a problem solver so what do we do?

Sadly Brandon won’t do anything about the mosquitoes… they are awful!  
Brandon is too broke, too uneducated, to irresponsible  
It’s like living with a bunch of cattle having these people in charge of the city  
Keep in mind it’s been 5 years!  
Taxes will continue to rise… it’s disgusting

They are not getting better. Was out with the dogs for 3 minutes. Killed 18 (yup I counted) and still came in with more bites.  
I know this seems like a "small problem" but the side effects of all these pests is also a concern. They carry sickness and disease...which could cause long term issues for individuals and the health care system.  
The Mayor's Facebook post said the problem would be "discussed this week". Are you kidding me?  
We have very limited time to enjoy yards and parks...getting shorter every day spraying isn't done.  
Please city officials give us some relief.

Totally agree with wheatcitygirl! Winnipeg has fogged and it's been lovely there in the evenings. I can't get much for yard work done here as mosquitoes are so bad. By the time I finish work and have supper, the evening is shot because I'm getting eaten alive. They don't seem to care that I have bug spray on or that I'm using a Thermacell. Curious to see the trap counts this week.

Time for Change

I was there on saturday night at a backyard party and there was absolutely no mosquitos. None biting and none flying in your face. Definitely is time for a change whether on council or city manager. Oh yeah winnipeg fogged a week ago I guess that is the difference. Good that the Mayor is going to have a discussion. Does he go outside or stay in? Definitely a problem with the management of this city.

The City recently declared a state of emergency, and while many people are/were worried about whether or not they will be evacuated, or are filing insurance claims for flooded basements, I don't think that mosquitos are tops on the Mayor's list of concerns right now.

Would both issues  
1. Flood  
2. Mosquitoes  
fall under the same department?  
 
I don't know how the City of Brandon works.

Learn to accept criticism and look for solution. Better than excusing . Current council and mayor were aware about mosquito spraying situation well before the flood preparations was anticipated.

They have not fogged since 2022. Unlikely they will

Metal Health'll drive you mad!

I just emailed my counsellor and I think everyone and Brandon should be doing this. You cannot even stand outside for 10 minutes to enjoy the summer. They keep saying we don’t meet the threshold. Maybe they need to adjust the threshold or change the management and the counselors.

I just received a reply, this topic is on the agenda for tomorrow’s meeting He said he is voting for spraying now. Time will tell.

Glad to hear that counsellors are at least looking at the spraying issue. Time and again, only Berry and Lubke use common sense at the table. Berry has already stated that he doesn't support the "trap count" system. If you want to know if it's raining, just go outside - the same can be said for the mosquito issue. The incumbents that are running for reelection had better step up and show they have some courage and judgement. Stop following the current mayor.
